The Danish Society of Toxicology and Pharmacology organized EUROTOX 2024 in Copenhagen. The congress took place from 8th to 11th September and gathered over a thousand people at Denmark’s capital. The congress theme “Toxicology – A Quest for safe Chemicals and Medicines” reflects the congress programme including a variety of topics dealing with safety of drugs and environmental chemicals, new and emerging technologies, personalised medicine, human health effects caused by exposure to chemicals as well as safety issues arising from climate changes.
The work presented by Wiebke Alker from German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is a collaboration with SCENARIOS project partners from NTUA Periklis Tsiros and Haralambos Sarimveis and the title of the talk was “Development of a QSAR model for predicting PPARα activation by PFAS based on human in vitro data”. BfR performed in vitro experiments on PPARa activity with 33 PFAS. This experimental data has been implemented in a QSAR model developed by NTUA. The aim is to use this model to predict the potential of other PFAS, that are within the applicability domain of the model, to induce PPARa activation. Thereby the model can offer hazard insights and help to prioritize future in vitro experiments on PFAS toxicity, as the large number of PFAS makes it impossible to perform hazard characterization on all PFAS based on experimental data.
We are looking forward to present more results from the intensive research been carried out at SCENARIOS.
